ALTERNATIVE BREAKS
Alternative Breaks is currently accepting applications for our spring destinations. This program is a great way to get involved in community service during spring break as well as meet and hang out with fellow K-State students. Costs for the program run between $150 and $200 and cover meals, housing, and traveling expenses. Fundraising opportunities are available for those needing assistance with these program fees.
The following trips are being offered:
Dallas, Texas: AIDS Service of Dallas. In the past, ASD has teams work on a project that the maintenance staff cannot get to on a daily basis. Teams have: built a pergola in one of our courtyards, painted the entire basement garage, built a fence, helped with a special event, etc. In the past, teams have had a lot of fun learning new skills (power tools!) and making the apartment complexes even nicer for the men, women and children living at ASD with HIV/AIDS. Because it is impossible to know what work exactly will need to be done, teams are not given a definite project until closer to March. Our team will be housed at Catholic Conference and Formation Center.
Mesa, Arizona: Save the Family Foundation. Teams prepare homes for currently homeless families to move in to by painting the interiors and cleaning, as well as outdoor work on the homes. Housing is being provided at Grand Canyon State University.
Chicago, Illinois: Boys & Girls Club. We don’t have much information yet on what students will be doing for the Boys & Girls Club. Last year, students rotated through children’s groups according to gender and age. Housing for this site has not yet been determined.
La Follette, Tennessee: Cumberland Trail Conference. Students spend the week clearing trails on the Great Eastern Trail, a proposed 300 mile trail, 170 of which has been cleared by past volunteer groups. Site is very labor intensive though students in the past have given positive feedback about the experience and enjoyed the ‘outdoor’ work in the mountains. Housing is provided at Dogwood Lodge Camp.
New Orleans, Louisiana: Rebuilding Together. Since 1988, Rebuilding Together has worked towards fulfilling its mission to revitalize the homes of elderly and disabled low-income citizens. The type of work performed by volunteers varies widely according to the works needed for the house. The jobs may consist of interior or exterior painting, laying flooring, light carpentry or landscaping, to name a few. The team will be housed at United Saints Recovery Project.
Galveston, Texas: One Mission Galveston. One Mission Galveston takes in thousands of volunteer groups (45 universities volunteered during last year’s spring break season) and works to rebuild the city of Galveston after the devastation of Hurricane Ike in 2008. One Mission Galveston provides housing at Alamo Elementary School.
Applications are attached and can also be found on Kansas State’s Alternative Breaks website. www.k-statue.edu/leadership/AB.html . Completed applications can be e-mailed to Krystin Matuszewicz at krystin@ksu.edu or mailed to the Leadership Studies building at the following address:

The application deadline is February 5, 2010. If you have any questions, please e-mail Krystin, call her at 785-532-0663 or drop in her office at the new Leadership Studies building during her office hours, Monday and Wednesday 3:30-5:00.

SUNFLOWER CASA
Volunteer to be the difference between abuse and hope - become a Court-Appointed Special Advocate (CASA). Court-Appointed Special Advocates are volunteers who give their time to advocate for abused and neglected children in the court system. The need for CASA volunteers in our community continues to grow. During 2009, 181 child in need of care cases were filed in Riley, Clay and Pottawatomie counties. This means that we need your help now more than ever!
Spring training will begin on Monday, February 8, 2010 from 6-9 p.m. and will continue on Monday nights through March 29th (there will be no training on Monday, March 15th due to K-State’s spring break). Training will be held at First United Methodist Church (612 Poyntz) in the basement classroom (enter through the door in the alley). KSU STUDENT FARM
The KSU Student Farm is always looking for volunteers to come help out. The Student Farm focuses on practices that are sustainable and in turn require a lot of labor. We do have a club set up that volunteers time at the farm but we can always use another hand and we’re trying to find ways to get the word out. The farm’s mission statement is to provide education and quality produce to the Manhattan ks community. We have worked with different groups in the past and can work around people’s hours of availability. If you know of any list of places that offer a chance for community service, Farm Staff would really like to know so we can be available to more volunteers.

VOLUNTEER INCOME TAX ASSISTANCE
Riley County Extension coordinates the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance
program for Manhattan and Riley County. The 2010 tax season will be our
5th year coordinating this program. In 2009, we helped almost 350
low-income tax payers in collecting more than $350,000 in tax refunds
and paying more than $11,000 in tax liabilities. This program cannot
exist without the help of great volunteers. I’m looking for 15-20 tax
volunteers to work during the 2010 tax season. Volunteers need not be
accomplished tax preparers, just someone with an interest who is willing
to learn. It’s helpful if they’ve done their own taxes and have some
knowledge, but we have tax software that helps with the calculations. I
provide training to the volunteers in preparation for the tax season.
Our site operates from the beginning of February through mid-March at
the Manhattan Public Library. I’m attaching volunteer job descriptions,
a recruitment flyer and a volunteer application in hopes that you’ll
help me spread the word. Any help is appreciated!
