ALTERNATIVE BREAKS

Alternative Breaks is currently accepting applications for our spring destinations. This program is a great way to get involved in community service during spring break as well as meet and hang out with fellow K-State students. Costs for the program run between $150 and $200 and cover meals, housing, and traveling expenses. Fundraising opportunities are available for those needing assistance with these program fees.

The following trips are being offered:

Dallas, Texas: AIDS Service of Dallas. In the past, ASD has teams work on a project that the maintenance staff cannot get to on a daily basis. Teams have: built a pergola in one of our courtyards, painted the entire basement garage, built a fence, helped with a special event, etc. In the past, teams have had a lot of fun learning new skills (power tools!) and making the apartment complexes even nicer for the men, women and children living at ASD with HIV/AIDS. Because it is impossible to know what work exactly will need to be done, teams are not given a definite project until closer to March. Our team will be housed at Catholic Conference and Formation Center.

Mesa, Arizona: Save the Family Foundation. Teams prepare homes for currently homeless families to move in to by painting the interiors and cleaning, as well as outdoor work on the homes. Housing is being provided at Grand Canyon State University.

Chicago, Illinois: Boys & Girls Club. We don’t have much information yet on what students will be doing for the Boys & Girls Club. Last year, students rotated through children’s groups according to gender and age. Housing for this site has not yet been determined.

La Follette, Tennessee: Cumberland Trail Conference. Students spend the week clearing trails on the Great Eastern Trail, a proposed 300 mile trail, 170 of which has been cleared by past volunteer groups. Site is very labor intensive though students in the past have given positive feedback about the experience and enjoyed the ‘outdoor’ work in the mountains. Housing is provided at Dogwood Lodge Camp.

New Orleans, Louisiana: Rebuilding Together. Since 1988, Rebuilding Together has worked towards fulfilling its mission to revitalize the homes of elderly and disabled low-income citizens. The type of work performed by volunteers varies widely according to the works needed for the house. The jobs may consist of interior or exterior painting, laying flooring, light carpentry or landscaping, to name a few. The team will be housed at United Saints Recovery Project.

Galveston, Texas: One Mission Galveston. One Mission Galveston takes in thousands of volunteer groups (45 universities volunteered during last year’s spring break season) and works to rebuild the city of Galveston after the devastation of Hurricane Ike in 2008. One Mission Galveston provides housing at Alamo Elementary School.

Applications are attached and can also be found on Kansas State’s Alternative Breaks website. www.k-statue.edu/leadership/AB.html . Completed applications can be e-mailed to Krystin Matuszewicz at krystin@ksu.edu or mailed to the Leadership Studies building at the following address:
Alternative Breaks
107 Leadership Studies Building
Manhattan, KS 66506
The application deadline is February 5, 2010. If you have any questions, please e-mail Krystin, call her at 785-532-0663 or drop in her office at the new Leadership Studies building during her office hours, Monday and Wednesday 3:30-5:00.

SUNFLOWER CASA

Volunteer to be the difference between abuse and hope - become a Court-Appointed Special Advocate (CASA). Court-Appointed Special Advocates are volunteers who give their time to advocate for abused and neglected children in the court system. This means that we need your help now more than ever!

Spring training will begin on Monday, February 8, 2010 from 6-9 p.m. and will continue on Monday nights through March 29th (there will be no training on Monday, March 15th due to K-State’s spring break). KSU STUDENT FARM

The KSU Student Farm is always looking for volunteers to come help out. The Student Farm focuses on practices that are sustainable and in turn require a lot of labor. We do have a club set up that volunteers time at the farm but we can always use another hand and we’re trying to find ways to get the word out. The farm’s mission statement is to provide education and quality produce to the Manhattan ks community. We have worked with different groups in the past and can work around people’s hours of availability. If you know of any list of places that offer a chance for community service, Farm Staff would really like to know so we can be available to more volunteers.

VOLUNTEER INCOME TAX ASSISTANCE

Riley County Extension coordinates the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance
program for Manhattan and Riley County.  The 2010 tax season will be our
5th year coordinating this program.  In 2009, we helped almost 350
low-income tax payers in collecting more than $350,000 in tax refunds
and paying more than $11,000 in tax liabilities.  This program cannot
exist without the help of great volunteers.  I’m looking for 15-20 tax
volunteers to work during the 2010 tax season. Volunteers need not be
accomplished tax preparers, just someone with an interest who is willing
to learn. It’s helpful if they’ve done their own taxes and have some
knowledge, but we have tax software that helps with the calculations. I
provide training to the volunteers in preparation for the tax season.
Our site operates from the beginning of February through mid-March at
the Manhattan Public Library.  I’m attaching volunteer job descriptions,
a recruitment flyer and a volunteer application in hopes that you’ll
help me spread the word.  Any help is appreciated!

ACADEMIC DECATHLON

Mortar Board Senior Honor Society is once again hosting the Annual Kansas Academic Decathlon January 22-23, 2009. This is a very prestigious event in which many high school students from around the state of Kansas will meet to test their academic abilities and excellence in a weekend of competition. In order for such a large event to be a successful weekend, we need the support of many volunteers. In years past, students like you have contributed time and energy to the various events of the weekend.

There are many positions where volunteers are welcome. We need proctors to monitor tests for the Essay Competition, graders to read essays as well as listen to speeches, and people to help with our trivia contest, Superquiz.

Attached is a volunteer sign-up sheet providing room for names, e-mail addresses, availability, and preferred positions. All students who need to fulfill community service hours can do so with participation in the volunteer efforts of Academic Decathlon.

If you have any questions about the commitment, weekend as a whole, or positions, please feel free to contact Lauren Gillespie at lgillesp@ksu.edu. Thank you for your time and support of both Academic Decathlon and Kansas State University Mortar Board Senior Honor Society.

Note:  if you sign up, we will get back to you about dress, report time, and training. Training will take place at the beginning of the shift times.

We need assistance to help strike the set for A Christmas Carol? The final performance of our kid’s musical version of this show is on Sunday December 13. Strike will start immediately after the show at approximately 3:30pm. (Sunday Dec. 13)  Many hands make light work-we hope you will lend yours!

We also need volunteers to join us for our riser party!

If you can come and join the fun on Sunday January 3 starting at 10 am, we are sure you will enjoy the company - and many MAC patrons will enjoy the fruits of your labors! projectPLANTS VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

ProjectPLANTS-Promoting Lifelong Activity and Nutrition Through  Schools, is an exciting opportunity to cultivate a new generation of  gardeners and healthy children. This is an after-school garden club  program created through a grant to the Kansas State Department of  Horticulture.  High tunnel greenhouses were assembled in the summer of  2008 and Garden Clubs targeting 4th and 5th grade students, began in the fall of 2008 at each of four USD 383 Manhattan/Ogden schools:  Amanda Arnold, Bergman, Ogden and Theodore Roosevelt. The after-school Garden clubs are currently operating at these schools and we are currently looking for volunteers to help run our Garden Club programs next semester.  Our Garden Clubs will start back up Monday, January   25th, 2010 at each of these schools.

Volunteers are needed to help connect children to nature, increase their fruit and vegetable consumption and physical activity by “turning” them on to gardening. We need volunteers to lead and assist with the after-school Garden Club activities and to help maintain the school gardens and greenhouses.

We are looking for volunteers who can commit to at least one day a week, from 3:30-5:00pm during the 2010 Spring semester. Our spring Garden Club session lasts 12 weeks. The Garden Clubs at each school are held twice a week: Monday and Wednesday, or Tuesday and Thursday. You can volunteer for one day or two. There are also other volunteer opportunities available for people who cannot commit to this time frame, such as helping to maintain the gardens.

While experience working with kids or gardening is desirable, it is not required as we will provide a volunteer training as well as a volunteer guide and curriculum manual. As a Garden Club volunteer, you will be working in groups of 4-6 kids to lead or assist with gardening, physical activity or educational station, all laid out in the 12 week curriculum manual.

Any help is appreciated!

projectPLANTS VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

We will be holding a volunteer training session for the spring semester for all new volunteers Jan. 21st from 6-8:00pm on campus in the Throckmorton Plant Sciences Center, room 2414.  I have attached our volunteer brochure and volunteer application to this e-mail.  If you are interested in volunteering, please complete the volunteer application and either e-mail it to me @ erika17@ksu.edu or submit it to the campus address at the bottom of the application, Attn: Erika Huber.  Please submit your volunteer application as soon as possible!

Also, please let me know on your application if you would be interested in becoming a garden club leader or co-leader or if you unable to attend the volunteer training, but would still like to volunteer.

Please consider this wonderful opportunity to be a healthy role model for children and enjoy the therapeutic benefits associated with gardening activities.  We hope to hear from you soon!

Please contact Erika Huber, projectPlants Volunteer Coordinator @ erika17@ksu.edu or 532-1379 for more information or with any questions!

WORKING WITH STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

Working with 5th and 8th grade students with special needs. We are already currently working with Anthony Middle School special needs students here in Manhattan. We meet at Anthony Middle School.  The time and day depends on what hours both the teacher of the class and our groups schedules work, fortunately their class is open to lots of times that we can pick from.  We go in groups of three once a week and do many different things.  We participate in group activities with the special needs kids and help the teacher out in any way that we can.  We also do projects for her that she either does not have time for, or is incapable of doing.  With our group size, individuals go to Anthony about once every three weeks or so for an hour or two.

50 minutes) in the KSU English Language Program. No preparation is
expected. Make a difference in these students lives! They are
sometimes shy and hesitant of making mistakes. You can help give them the courage to speak, mistakes and all. You will not be on your own.  A teacher will facilitate the whole thing.

Please email the Associate Director, Beverley Earles (earles@k-state.edu) with your full name, telephone number and availability.

ALTERNATIVE BREAKS

Alternative Breaks is currently accepting applications for the 2010 Winter Break trip to St. Louis!

What
is Alternative Breaks? Alternative Breaks is a program run through the
School of Leadership Studies that offers service opportunities to
students wanting to volunteer over winter and spring break. Teams of
students travel to communities throughout the country where they work with local residents to address a pressing social issue, such as
poverty or environmentalism. Students are exposed to a variety of
geographic, economic, and cultural environments while gaining a new
understanding of service and forming a lifelong commitment to
citizenship.

All students at K-State are encouraged to apply.
Though the program is run through the School of Leadership Studies, no previous leadership experience is required. Participants are expected to be hard-working, adaptable, mature, flexible, and service-oriented.

This year, our winter break team will travel to St. Louis to partner with
Saint Louis University’s Campus Kitchen. The trip will take place from Sunday, January 3 through Friday, January 8.

Applications are attached and are due by October 30, 2009.

For those not available during winter break, check out our 6 locations
offered during Spring Break! More information can be found at the
School of Leadership Studies website.

VOLUNTEER INCOME TAX ASSISTANCE

Riley County Extension coordinates the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program for Manhattan and Riley County. The 2010 tax season will be our 5th year coordinating this program. In 2009, we helped almost 350 low-income tax payers in collecting more than $350,000 in tax refunds and paying more than $11,000 in tax liabilities. This program cannot exist without the help of great volunteers. I’m looking for 15-20 tax volunteers to work during the 2010 tax season. Volunteers need not be accomplished tax preparers, just someone with an interest who is willing to learn. It’s helpful if they’ve done their own taxes and have some knowledge, but we have tax software that helps with the calculations. I provide training to the volunteers in preparation for the tax season. Our site operates from the beginning of February through mid-March at the Manhattan Public Library. I’m attaching volunteer job descriptions, a recruitment flyer and a volunteer application in hopes that you’ll help me spread the word. Any help is appreciated!

STONEYBROOK RETIREMENT COMMUNITY

From our resident survey it appears we may have 12 to 14 residents interested in bowling. Since some of them are in wheelchairs or use a walking device, it will be helpful to have three to five volunteers to assist our residents get off the bus, move to the bowling alley via the elevators. As bowling is happening volunteers will carry the ball from the return to the bowling ramp. Following the bowling time (1:30 to 3:00) volunteers can assist residents back to the bus. I am working with our Activity Director and the K-State Bowling Lanes to confirm our Wednesday time slot. I am grateful for your interest in helping us integrate our residents with community activities. Thank you and let’s keep in touch.

BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB OF MANHATTAN

Volunteer Opp #1
What: Before- and After-School Mentors
When:  Before-school programs (7:30-8:45am) and After-school programs (3:45-6:00pm). Commitment of 2 hours/week for the duration of the semester required.
Why: Support the Boys & Girls Club mission
of providing a safe, positive place for kids! Spend time with youth in
Kindergarten through 6th grade and our wonderful program staff!

Volunteer Opp #2
What: Member Tracking Support- We need 1-5 volunteers to scan in/scan out members using our electronic MTS system
When:
One volunteer is needed to help scan from 2:30 to 4:30 each day of the
week. We are willing to accept up to 5 volunteers to help.
Why:
Accurately tracking members is critical to the success of the
programs. Volunteering during this time allows trained program staff
to begin the implementation of programs and supervise members rather
than remain seated at the front desk.

Volunteer Opp #3
What: Snack Assistant- Help supervise members during snack time and assist with clean-up (30 - 45 minutes)
When: Before-school programs (3:45-4:30pm)
Why:
A nutritious snack is critical for Club members to learn and play
during after-school programs. Volunteering during this time allows
trained program staff to get a head start on programs.
