The second annual LIVE, SERVE, CELEBRATE UNITED will take place the last Friday of August in collaboration with the United Way of Riley County and the Aggieville Business Association. Please join us in a Day of Caring, Service, and Celebration on August 27, 2010. As a part of K-State’s Week of Welcome, the Day of Caring will provide local community organizations and businesses the opportunity to engage with over 200 participants throughout the day!

Not-for-profit organizations will be eligible to utilize volunteers for service throughout the day. Last year, as a first-time event, LIVE, SERVE, CELEBRATE UNITED engaged over 125 volunteers and 18 local organizations in service efforts. We anticipate around 200 volunteers looking to participate this year.

We need your help in making this year’s event even more successful than the last in any way you would like to participate. New community members will be able to LEARN about their new community, and returning community members will be able to SHARE what their community has to offer.

VOLUNTEERS–Please e-mail userve@ksu.edu times you are available to serve in the community on this day and we will work to place you in an organization. Other opportunities to volunteer are available throughout the year based on your interests, so we hope you are open to having a new volunteering experience for the Day of Caring!

PARTICIPATING ORGANIZATIONS:

In Manhattan, KS:

Manhattan Public Library– (volunteer spaces filled). Volunteers will be dusting shelves and doing light cleaning. Please wear: CASUAL, COMFORTABLE CLOTHES FOR DUSTING. MEET IN THE ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICE ON THE 2^ND FLOOR WITH LINDA KNUPP TO START.

Salvation Army–(10-noon, 1-3, 3-5–15 spaces each shift available)

The Salvation Army provides low cost clothing and furniture items to community members. All donations are resold and money goes to programs used to help family literacy and education efforts. Volunteers will be sorting, cleaning, and bringing up items from the basement that need to be disposed of. Volunteers should wear comfortable shoes and clothing that are sufficient for moving items, also no alcohol or tobacco advertisements.

Riley County Wolf House Museum–(10-noon, 1-3, 3-5–2 spaces each shift available) The Wolf House and Goodnow House are historic homes in the Riley County area, used for educational opportunities for local youth. Volunteers will be doing trimming and other outdoor work to beautify a historic site in the area. Volunteers should wear outdoor clothes, and closed-toe shoes for weeding, taking, trimming, etc. Volunteers should wear comfortable shoes and clothing that are sufficient for moving items, also no alcohol or tobacco advertisements.

Riley County Goodnow House Museum–(10-noon, 1-3, 3-5–2 spaces each shift available)

The Wolf House and Goodnow House are historic homes in the Riley County area, used for educational opportunities for local youth. Volunteers will be doing trimming and other outdoor work to beautify a historic site in the area. Volunteers should wear outdoor clothes, and closed-toe shoes for weeding, taking, trimming, etc. Volunteers should wear comfortable shoes and clothing that are sufficient for moving items, also no alcohol or tobacco advertisements.

KSU Insect Zoo—(1-3pm—6 spaces available). The KSU Insect Zoo provides educational science opportunities to youth in the Riley County area. Volunteers will be cleaning animal cages used at the zoo (wash with soap, disinfect with bleach, rinse, and towel dry). Please wear shoes that can get wet.

Hand to Hand at the Douglass Center—(10-noon, 1-3—4 spaces each shift available)

Label file folder games as phonics, language arts, or math, grades PK, K, 1, 2, and 3/ Dust blinds and move crates of materials. Volunteers should be able to lift items up to 30 lbs., dust, and/or have neat handwriting. Wear clothing and shoes comfortable for moving items, no alcohol or tobacco advertisements, and no low-cut shirts or other revealing clothing.

RSVP/Help us learn, Give us Hope—(10-noon: 15 spaces available, 1-3pm: 10 spaces available, 3-5—5 spaces available) Volunteers will be packing and boxing school supply items that are shipped to Iraq and Afghanistan to help with community revitalization in those countries. ***Organization has requested that volunteers who are able bring a small tote bag (Wal-Mart or Target have them for less than $1.00) to donate with school supply items (pencils, crayons, notebook/paper, etc.) if possible.***

United Way of Riley County—(10-noon, 1-3—10 spaces each shift available) Volunteers will be stuffing envelopes for the United Way’s annual campaign that provides much needed funding to area community organizations.

Manhattan Arts Center—1520 Poyntz Ave. (10-noon, 1-3, 3-5–6 spaces each shift available) The Manhattan Arts Center provides “arts for all” in the community through community theatre productions, galleries, and other arts classes. Volunteers will be setting and painting the stage of an upcoming production. Volunteers need to be able to lift heavy stage platforms.

Rocky Ford School/Riley County Historical Museum—(10-noon, 3-5pm) The Rocky Ford School House is a historic site in the Riley County area, used for educational opportunities for local youth. Volunteers will be doing trimming and other outdoor work to beautify a historic site in the area. Volunteers should wear outdoor clothes, and closed-toe shoes for weeding, taking, trimming, etc. Volunteers should wear comfortable shoes and clothing that are sufficient for moving items, also no alcohol or tobacco advertisements.

In Ogden, KS:

Ogden Community Center–(10-noon–7 spaces available)

Ogden Community Center provides recreational activities for all in the Ogden, KS community. Volunteers will be painting City Park benches and other beautification of park areas. Will be outside, paint involved, will want to wear clothes suitable for the project. Closed shoes, etc.

Ogden House of Hope—106 N. Elm St. (10-noon, 1-3pm, 3-5pm–8 spaces available each shift)

Ogden, located eight miles west of Manhattan, is home to countless poverty-level families, many of whom are single women with young children. Each week, the house gives a variety of supplies including canned goods, perishable foods, health products, and clothing to around 50 families. Volunteers will organize distribution center (House of Hope) and storage building to inventory items available to families in need.

Twelve Days of Orientation and Enrollment

Get to know what the Volunteer Center and other School of Leadership Studies programs can offer new K-State students. Anyone is invited to meet our staff at our information table on the 1st floor of the K-State Union from Noon- 3p.m. beginning June 10 and ending June 25. This includes weekdays except Mondays and Tuesdays and includes Saturdays. Hope to see you.

Give It Up for Good

The Good Neighbor’s Program and Students in Action have teamed up to bring you the 1st Annual “Give it up for Good” Furniture collection and distribution event.
May 14th: 8-3pm–Bring your unwanted furniture and household items to City Park baseball diamonds, Derby Dining Center parking lot, Kramer Dining Center parking lot OR call: 785-587-2408 for a FREE pickup of donation items (clothing excluded).
May 15th: 8am-noon–Items left over from donation day will be sold to the public at City Park.

*Volunteers needed to lift, organize, and load furniture.

Celebrating People in Action: Community Service Awards

This year marked the sixth annual Celebrating People in Action: Community Service Awards hosted by Community First National Bank, K-State’s Office of the Provost, and the K-State Volunteer Center of Manhattan. Every year we award outstanding volunteers in our community as part of the Celebrating People in Action: Community Service Awards. This year was we had two new categories to recognize volunteers from the community who serve in the Community. Outstanding Community Group, and Outstanding Youth Volunteer are the new Categories for this year. Each of our awardees was given $500.00 to donate to a local non-profit organization of their choice. We were proud to recognize the following Outstanding Volunteers.
